Video Cameras and Video Monitoring: (Lessons Learned)
Over the past few years, TDB Software has been implementing and refining our own video surveillance system for our office. We’d like to share some key insights and discoveries from our journey to help others considering similar installations.
Our Initial System
We started with an internet-purchased kit from ZOSI that included:
- 8 web cameras
- Basic CAT5 network cabling (poor quality)
- DVR unit (hard drive sold separately)
Wiring Considerations: Wired vs. Wireless
We chose wired Power over Ethernet (PoE) cameras for several reasons:
- Maximum streaming capability from cameras
- Superior reliability compared to wireless alternatives
- Elimination of power quality issues that can affect wireless performance
The network cables provided in the kit were low-quality CAT5, so we engaged network cabling specialists to install proper IP wiring to our chosen camera locations throughout the office. Critical tip: Always ensure your cabling is professionally tested and verified. Many contractors claim IP cabling expertise, but if they don’t test the cables upon completion, find someone else. Unverified cabling can cause ongoing connectivity issues and significant troubleshooting time.
We selected PoE specifically to avoid running separate power lines to each camera location, simplifying installation and reducing potential failure points.
Initial System Costs
Rough cost of the initial system.
- Camera kit: $500
- Professional wiring: $700
- PoE switch: $200
Total initial investment: $1,400
Performance Issues and Upgrades
While the initial system functioned most of the time, we experienced regular camera dropouts requiring system resets, and video quality was average to poor. Over six months, we gradually replaced the original cameras with higher-quality Reolink models.
The new Reolink cameras delivered excellent performance with no dropouts and superior image quality. However, the recorded video quality remained subpar because the DVR couldn’t process the improved camera feeds effectively. Rather than purchasing an expensive and potentially underpowered replacement DVR, we opted for a dedicated computer system that could be upgraded as needed.

- Blue Iris surveillance software
Special mention: We installed a dual Reolink camera unit at our front entrance, providing wide-angle coverage of the entire front yard with high-quality 2K resolution using a single mounting point.
